Review:
What a great idea to write a book with easy poems, plus activities
and recommended picture books, all fitting the theme of each poem.
I'm the mother of an only child, Natalie (now 12 years old). When
Natalie was a toddler, she expected me to fill her day with exciting
activities. Actually, as soon as she was able to talk, she complained
she was bored whenever there were no other kids around to play. I
loved reading to her, but it didn't keep her interested for more than
half an hour. I wish I had had a book like "Poetry Play for
Preschoolers" at that time.
Here's how I would have spent one of those boring, rainy,
alone-at-home days with Natalie: First I would have read one of the
poems to her, e.g. "Laundry Day". Then Natalie and I would
have invented a tune so we could sing the poem. My daughter always
loved singing or banging merrily on the piano keys. Equipped with the
song we'd have gone into the bedroom to sort the laundry while
singing "our song". Then I'd have printed out the laundry
basket from the e-book and she would have drawn the clothes to fill
it, while I would have (filled) the washing machine. Thus I could
have combined housework with play. When the clothes were dry and
clean again, we would have played "Basket of Fun", one of
the many activities Kimberly M. Hutmacher presents in her book.
Finally, I'd have chosen one of the books she suggests for reading as
a bedtime story. I bet, a couple of days later, my daughter would
have insisted on having another laundry day.
Older children might also like to use this book as an incentive to
play with their smaller siblings. I warmly recommend "Poetry
Play for Preschoolers".
